Recently, I was reminded of the profound lesson of wild American Ginseng, known historically as "Green Gold."</div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">&#8203;The Tale of Two Roots</h2>  <div class="paragraph">In the wild, a ginseng seed falls on the harsh, rocky floor of a mountain forest. To survive, it must fight for decades. It endures freezing winters, scorching summers, and poor soil. It grows incredibly slowly, sometimes taking 50 years to reach significant size.<br />&#8203;<br />Because of this constant stress, the wild root becomes gnarly and tough. But to protect itself, it produces powerful compounds called ginsenosides. These are its immune system. As you can see in this anatomical study above, the medicine we harvest is more than just chemistry; it is a blueprint of survival.<br /><br />&#8203;The glowing golden channels within the root represent the plant&rsquo;s <em>Qi</em>. Just as we develop our own character and "internal medicine" through processing life's hardships, the ginseng root alchemises the pressure of the mountain into a concentrated essence of vitality.</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">Alchemising Our Own Challenges</h2>  <div class="paragraph">Modern life often encourages us to seek the "greenhouse"&mdash;to avoid discomfort at all costs. Yet, ancient wisdom suggests that friction is necessary for cultivation. To me, it perfectly represents one of the most profound and sacred truths of our existence: our deep, unbroken connection to our ancestors.<br /><br />It&rsquo;s a stunning visualization of a biological marvel: <strong>I was physically present, as a single cell, inside my grandmother&rsquo;s womb. </strong>And if you are biologically female, the same was true for you, too.<br /><br />It sounds like a riddle, but it is a scientific fact.&nbsp;</div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">The Nested Spark: A Biological Marvel</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">Here is how it works:<ol><li>When your <strong>maternal grandmother</strong> was pregnant, she was carrying your <strong>mother</strong> as a fetus.</li><li>By the time your mother was a 20-week-old fetus, she had <em>already developed all the oocytes (immature eggs) she would ever have</em> in her entire life.</li><li>One of those specific eggs&mdash;which existed inside your mother, who was inside your grandmother&mdash;would one day be fertilized and become <strong>you</strong>.</li></ol><br /> You are a direct, physical link in an unbroken matrilineal chain.<br /><br />This fact is beautiful, but it opens a deeper, more vulnerable question: If we inherit this profound physical connection, what else do we inherit?<br /><br />If our grandmothers lived through war, famine, or deep personal trauma while that tiny egg (containing our potential) was inside them, could we be carrying the echoes of that experience?<br /><br />The answer, from both modern science and ancient wisdom, is <strong>yes.</strong><br /></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title"><span>&#8203;The "Sticky Notes" of Trauma: Epigenetics</span></h2>  <div class="paragraph">This is where the emerging field of <strong>epigenetics</strong> comes in, which the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/genomics-and-health/epigenetics/index.html" target="_blank"><strong>CDC defines as the study of how our behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way our genes work</strong>.</a><br /><br />Think of your DNA as a giant, complex cookbook:<ul><li><strong>Genetics</strong>&nbsp;is the cookbook itself&mdash;the recipes (genes) are written in permanent ink.</li><li><strong>Epigenetics</strong>&nbsp;is like a set of "sticky notes" and "highlighters" placed on those recipes.</li></ul> &#8203;<br />These epigenetic marks don't change your&nbsp;<em>genes</em>, but they change&nbsp;<em>how your genes are read</em>. They can act like a dimmer switch, turning a gene's expression "up" or "down."<br /><br />A traumatic event (like our ancestor's) can cause a biological stress response that&nbsp;<em>adds</em>&nbsp;these sticky notes. This is a survival mechanism. It might turn "up" the gene for hyper-vigilance or anxiety.<br /><br />The stunning discovery is that these "sticky notes" can be passed down.<br /><br />We don't inherit the&nbsp;<em>memory</em>&nbsp;of the trauma, but we can inherit the&nbsp;<em>biological response</em>&nbsp;to it. This can come from both sides of our family:<ul><li><strong>Maternally:</strong>&nbsp;Directly, via the egg cell that was exposed to our grandmother's&nbsp;<em>in utero</em>&nbsp;environment.</li><li><strong>Paternally:</strong>&nbsp;Indirectly, via epigenetic marks passed down through our father's lineage that can be "remembered" in sperm.</li></ul><br />If you&rsquo;ve ever felt you carry a sadness, fear, or pattern that doesn't feel entirely&nbsp;<em>yours</em>, you may be sensing this epigenetic inheritance.</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title"><span>Ancient Wisdom: The TCM View of Ancestral Inheritance</span></h2>  <div class="paragraph"><span>As a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, this "new" science is not new to me at all. It&rsquo;s an ancient concept described as&nbsp;</span><strong>Jing</strong><span>, or "Essence."<br /></span><br /><span>In TCM, there are two types of Jing:<br /></span><ol><li><strong>Pre-Heaven Jing (&#20808;&#22825;&#20043;&#31934;):</strong>&nbsp;This is your&nbsp;<strong>ancestral inheritance</strong>. It's the "constitutional" energy you get from your parents and ancestors at conception. It's your "trust fund" of vitality, and it's where the signature of intergenerational trauma would reside. It's stored in the Kidneys.</li><li><strong>Post-Heaven Jing (&#24460;&#22825;&#20043;&#31934;):</strong>&nbsp;This is your&nbsp;<strong>acquired essence</strong>. It's the energy you refine&nbsp;<em>after</em>&nbsp;birth from the food you eat (via the Spleen/Stomach) and the air you breathe (via the Lungs). This is your "daily income."</li></ol><br /> <span>When we are chronically stressed, overworked, or re-living trauma patterns, we are burning through our "daily income" (Post-Heaven Jing) and dipping into our precious "trust fund" (Pre-Heaven Jing).<br /></span><br /><strong>Healing, therefore, is the act of conserving our ancestral inheritance.</strong><br /></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title"><span>How We Heal the Line (For Ourselves and Our Children)</span></h2>  <div class="paragraph"><span>This is not a life sentence. It's an empowerment.</span><br /><br /><span>The most hopeful part of epigenetic science is that these "sticky notes" are believed to be&nbsp;</span><strong>reversible</strong><span>. The practices we use to heal ourselves can, quite literally, change our gene expression.</span><br /><br /><span>When we heal, we are not just healing ourselves. We are healing the line, backward and forward.<br /><br /><strong>1. Healing Ourselves: Building Our "Daily Income"</strong></span><br /><br /><span>As a health coach and practitioner, this is the core of my work. We heal by building up a massive surplus of Post-Heaven Jing so our bodies are no longer running on the "fumes" of our ancestral reserves:<br />&#8203;<br /></span><ul><li><strong>Nourish the Spleen:</strong>&nbsp;We build new Qi and Blood from good food. This is the foundation. Warm, nourishing, cooked foods are the building blocks of our "daily income."</li></ul><br /><ul><li><strong>Calm the Shen (Spirit):</strong>&nbsp;Trauma scatters our Spirit. Practices like meditation, acupuncture, Qigong, and simply creating a safe environment&nbsp;<em>directly</em>&nbsp;tell our nervous system to "remove the sticky notes" of hyper-vigilance.</li></ul><br /><ul><li><strong>Move Liver Qi:</strong>&nbsp;Trauma and unexpressed emotions (anger, frustration, grief) create stagnation. We&nbsp;<em>must</em>&nbsp;allow these emotions to be expressed and moved, or they will stay stuck in the body.</li></ul><br /><strong><span>2. Healing Our Children: The Gift of a New Foundation</span></strong><br /><br /><span>This work is personal for me. With so much trauma in my own lineage, I was determined to give my children a different foundation.</span><br /><br /><span>When I was pregnant with both my children, I was mindful about being as healthy and stable as possible. They were conscious conceptions. I was also able to breastfeed each of them for three-four years.</span><br /><br /><span>From a TCM perspective, I was doing two things:</span><ol><li>Passing on the strongest&nbsp;<strong>Pre-Heaven Jing</strong>&nbsp;I could.</li><li>Giving them a robust foundation of&nbsp;<strong>Post-Heaven Jing</strong>&nbsp;(via a healthy pregnancy and breast milk, which is seen as a continuation of Blood and Essence).</li></ol><br /><span>This is what we can do for our children.&nbsp;</span><strong>Our own healing is their healing.</strong><span>&nbsp;<br /><br />By regulating our own nervous systems, we create a safe, coherent environment for them.<br /><br />By feeding them well, we build their "daily income" so they never have to dip into their ancestral "trust fund."</span><br /><br /><span>We are all a living, breathing link in a chain. We carry the burdens of our ancestors, but we also carry their resilience.
