By Angie This is the first of a series of articles highlighting recent research findings in the field of acupuncture. Acupuncture is sometimes discounted as a sham or as just a placebo, however there is a great deal of research suggesting that acupuncture can be of benefit for many problems that people face today. I seek to bring you relevant and interesting updates in this series. One of the best things you can do for your body is to feed it real, wholesome, nutritious foods. If you can find locally grown organic products, even better. The benefits of organic food include less pesticide contamination, higher nutrient content, no genetic modifications, no irradiation, more humane treatment of animals and respect for the land, and better taste. Of all these health benefits, the only subjective one is taste. Let’s say you are looking over some produce and you are deciding whether to go organic or stick with the conventional version. If your primary concern is the health of you and your family, then it’s a no-brainer; go with the organic*. If, however, your decision is based solely on taste, it’s a toss up, as some report a distinct advantage to organic while others claim no taste difference between organic and conventional. Do you know a yo-yo dieter? This is someone who needs to shed a few kilos, so they instill changes in their diet and lifestyle designed to quickly bring about results. As long as they stick to a healthy plan the weight will start to come off. At the first sign of weight loss, however, they begin to grow content and abandon the very strategy that helped them in the first place. At this point their weight balloons up again and the whole cycle starts over. What these people fail to realise is that healthy living is not an event, but rather a lifestyle. Until they make a lasting commitment to finally follow through with and maintain a program of healthy eating and exercise, they will always bounce up and down like a yo-yo. |
