Dietary Therapy“He that takes medicine and neglects the diet wastes the skill of the physician” - Chinese proverb A healthy diet is the cornerstone of good health. It is absolutely fundamental that we pay conscious attention to our diet – it is such a powerful way to improve almost any health condition you can think of and so important for the maintenance of good health. But what does a 'healthy diet' actually look like?
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach to diet, much like its approach to everything else, is not 'one size fits all'. For optimal health, healing and growth, one's individual diet needs to take into account a wide range of factors, including internal (e.g. your current state of health; your current stage of life; your individual constitution), and external (e.g. the season; the time of day; the energetics of foods and cooking methods). When you come to see me for a treatment, I can offer you customised dietary guidance from the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine as part of your healing plan. In addition to advanced training in TCM dietary therapy, I also keep up with the latest research in modern western nutrition and functional medicine. I think it is vitally important to keep an integrative perspective and would be amiss to overlook advances such as the rapidly expanding body of knowledge about the microbiome and its importance of our overall health. There is an increasingly elegant dovetail effect between Western and Eastern philosophy towards gut health – TCM has always placed the digestive function at the centre of health, and Western scientists are just starting to realise this too, but from a very different perspective. I find this fascinating and keep all these factors in mind when I making recommendations about dietary therapy. Whilst this may all sounds complicated, I try to make it as easy and manageable as I can. My support around food and eating can be very basic, or I can be available for more in-depth dietary consultations if you are interested in diving further into making powerful and positive changes to your health and vitality. As the quote above implies, when seeking treatment from a practitioner (of any kind), you will get results more quickly and effectively if you also make supportive changes to your diet. I know this can be difficult, but I am here to support you every step of the way. |
