My Commitment to the EnvironmentChinese Medicine traditionally has a deep appreciation and respect for the earth. Countless texts clearly explain that health and harmony in our bodies are only possible when we are living in harmony with our environment. This 'bigger picture' of Chinese Medicine has unfortunately become somewhat neglected in modern times with the isolation of just a few modalities (e.g. acupuncture or herbs) from the context of this truly holistic system of medicine.
However, I am very aware of our relationship with nature and our responsibility to care for the environment. I aim to integrate my environmental responsibility into all aspects of my practice. I have made a commitment to minimise the environmental impact of my business and I fully support sustainable development principles on a local, national and global scale. I own and manage my own clinic (the Quan Yin Healing Centre) and so I am in a wonderful position to implement eco-friendly policies in my workplace, allowing me to practice in a truly sustainable way. I also have a strong commitment to giving back to the community that you can read about here. What am I doing to make a difference? * The clinic is run by 100% accredited renewable energy through Diamond Energy, who have been top ranked in the Greenpeace Electricity Guide for the last three years in a row. * I only buy recycled paper products - including our paper, folders, filing system, and paper towel. * I have an extensive recycling program, that includes special recycling boxes for plastic gloves (you would be amazed how many I get through), office supplies, foil snack wrappers, acupuncture needle 'tubes', batteries, soft plastics as well as the standard council recycling items. * I have a compost system where we can compost our paper towels, tissues, cotton balls as well as food scraps, meaning that we are now approaching zero waste! * When it isn't absolutely necessary to use paper towels, I use small reusable towels (face washers) for drying my hands after washing them, which each get washed and sanitised after every single use (I have a big stack!). ' * When I founded the QYHC, I replaced 24 halogen down-lights with energy efficient LED light globes to significantly decrease our energy consumption, and am currently making the switch to LED with our fleuro light globes as well. * When I offer you a drink of water or tea, it is in a Simply Cup which is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® and is fully recyclable. I collect all our used cups and take them to our local Simply Cups collection point in Blaxland. * The herbal teas I offer are organic and fair-trade. * I use only non-toxic cleaning, laundry and pest control products that do not place pressure on our waterways. * I even have a staple-less stapler at reception and use pens made out of recycled paper! I am always looking for new ways to reduce my environmental footprint, and welcome any feedback or suggestions. Here's to a bright and green future for all of us! |
